Whether you are moving to a new apartment, your first home, or a new home—packing and moving can be quite stressful. Ease the stress, and make moving easy with the tips below.
Invest In The Right Moving Supplies
Moving supplies can be surprisingly expensive, but they are worth every penny. If you know you are moving in a few months, start stocking up now. This includes:
- Found boxes
- Item-specific boxes
- Packing tape
- Packing paper and bubbles
- Plastic mattress cover
- Furniture pads
- Moving truck
- Labels to organize your move
Pre-Pack What You Can
Most of us have collectibles, books, movies, and seasonal items that can be packed well in advance. While it might not seem like much, when it comes time to move you will appreciate the small dent you have made.
Donate, Sell, Toss Piles
Moving is the perfect time to downsize your items. Set aside some large plastic bags and boxes to place your pre-move garage sale items, items for donation—and the items you want to toss. Apply the garage sale proceeds to your moving expenses.
Organizing Your Move
Organize your move by keeping the boxes light, and packing heavy items in small boxes. Try to keep all items in the same category, or from the same room. Label each and every box with its general contents, on the top and on two sides. This should include which room in your new home it is going to. If you are moving long distance, don’t forget to keep all of your moving receipts as you may be able to write-off your expenses.
Last but not least, use your luggage and a box or two to pack essentials such as pet food, electronic cords, clothing for the next few days, and your must need towels, linens, cleaning supplies, and toiletries. Plan on ordering take out the day of, and maybe invest in some disposable dinning ware.
