When was the last time you Googled yourself? If you have never typed your name into Google, or if it’s been a while—now is the time. Here are just a few reasons you need to Google yourself.
Because Other People Are
Everyone from potential employers, clients, dates, and friends head online to learn more about you. Not everything that populates will shine you in a positive light. If you know what is there, you can work on removing it.
What To Do With The Information You Find
If you find photos that are less than desirable, poor businesses reviews or private information that you don’t want online you can get to work removing it—or at least bury it. For example, a poor business review won’t seem as bad if you can boost your positive reviews. For the rest, remove photos, improve social media privacy settings, ask friends to remove the tagged photos of you (or at least the tags), and submit removal requests directly to the website or to Google. Look at all search results, not just the general results. If you have a strong or large online presence you can hire an online reputation management firm to do a cleanup and manage your ongoing online presence.
Googling yourself may also remind you of old social media accounts and online profiles you no longer use. Now is the perfect time to clean things up by deleting them.
While you are at it, Google your spouse and kids too—and don’t forget to Google your previous names or versions of your name. For example, your maiden name, or if go by both DJ or Darrelle James. And, not just Google but Bing too.
