    The Surprising Benefits Of Keeping A Food Journal

    I signed up for a set of 12 personal training sessions, 1 a week for the next 12 weeks. My trainer suggested that I keep a food journal for the next 2 weeks so that we could review my eating habits. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but here’s what I learned.

    I Ate And Drank More Empty Calories Than I Imagined

    I rarely drink soda and only eat the occasional pre-packaged snacks, so I thought there wouldn’t be much in terms of empty calories in my diet—but I was wrong. Between my café coffees and the mindlessly devoured “healthy” snacks, I was consuming 200 to 400 calories a day that held little to no nutritional value.

    I Started To Make More Conscious Decisions

    My trainer didn’t ask me to make any dietary changes, as he just wanted to get a baseline. However, putting that pen to paper (or electronic screen) I started to make more conscious and healthy decisions—both in food choice and in portion.

    I Made A Lot Of Healthy Decisions

    I really do enjoy my grains, fruits, and veggies—and this was reflected in my diet. I found myself quite excited that I naturally made a lot of healthy food choices—which inspired me to make more.

    Yes, I still have a sweet tooth and my diet is not perfection—but my 2-week food journal made me feel empowered to take care of my body.
