“Authenticity” is a buzz word we hear everywhere, but what does it mean to be authentic? Many believe authentic living is the path to true happiness and fulfillment. Let’s take a closer look at how to get there.

Authentic living should be easy, but most of us have been conditioned to live a life full of goals designed by others. This includes societal expectations and norms, and also the well-intended expectations placed on us by those we love. This makes true authentic living an art form.

The First Step

The first step for those ready to really be authentic is to start living life consciously. With every decision you make in your day, with every word that comes out of your mouth, with every commitment or obligation—you must consider if it is what you want. Even the job you work may not be one that fulfills your true purpose or passion.

Authentic living doesn’t mean going through life disrespecting others but respecting yourself, by being true to your nature. This is something conditioned out of most of us, but something we crave at our deepest level. Authenticity will take some time but may be the most empowering and freeing achievement of your adult life.
