Even if you aren’t scared of flying you might hate flying—the airports, the crowds, the delays, thoughtless passengers, and more. Here’s how to take the stress out of travel.

Arrive Early

There is nothing worse than rushing to the airport during your drive or stressing while you stand in the 1 hour or more airport security line. Plan to arrive at the airport with ample time to spare and plan on having a drink or bite to eat if you have any spare time. If you fly frequently enrolling in TSA Pre-Check is well worth it.

Come Prepared

Make sure to have snacks, earplugs, an eye mask, hand sanitizer, ibuprofen, Kleenex, something to read, fully charged electronics, all chargers, and other essentials that will help you kill time and stay comfortable on the plane or during a flight delay. If it’s in your budget upgrade to business or first class, which is often far cheaper if you do at the airport the day of.

Don’t Stress Over What You Can’t Control

Easier said than done, but there is no reason to get upset or angry when things go awry—delays, canceled flights, and more. Try to build a bit of cushion into your travel schedule but don’t get worked up over something you can’t change.

Last but not least, if you really hate flying consider your alternatives—such as driving or taking the train.
