Almost everyone gets nervous on a first date and sometimes this nervousness leads to awkward pauses in conversation. You already know that you should try to relax and just be yourself, but what do you talk about with someone you don’t know all that well? All without getting too personal too fast? Here are some questions and topics.
- Ask more about what you already know you have in common. Even small things such as that you both enjoy Italian food which is why you picked the restaurant you’re dining at.
- Don’t just ask them what they do for a living, but go a bit deeper. Ask if it something they have always wanted to do, how long have they been in their field, and why they enjoy what they do? If they aren’t yet in their dream job ask them what their dream job is.
- Inquire about the basics such as where they grew up, went to school, how many siblings they have, etc. However, family topics are sometimes sensitive so if they keep it brief don’t pry.
- Take the standard ‘What do you do for fun?’ and take it to the next level. For example, if you live in a city with humid summers or cold winters ask them what they look forward to each season? Do they go to local sports games? What are their favorite local spots?
Even if they are nervous and forget to ask you the reciprocating question go ahead and answer the questions for yourself. With every question look for opportunities to keep the conversation flowing to new topics.
