As challenging, complex, and beautiful our personal life experiences are we must never lose sight of the fact that our experience is not everyone’s experience. Here is how to see beyond ourselves and welcome other people’s life journey.
Consider Where You Have Come From
We have all made assumptions and judgments regarding how we believe we would respond to something we have never experienced—but once it happens to us our perspective shifts. What this lesson teaches us is that we must not lose sight of the fact that we must apply that mindset to every situation. We must also remember that everyone takes different lessons away from similar experiences, so our experience may be totally different to someone else.
It’s Not About You
Most of our opinions, assumptions, and judgment are based on societal norms or how we think we would respond in the same circumstances. Even how we have responded in the same circumstances. However, another person’s journey is not about you. To truly connect we must be willing to listen and accept that their story is true and real for them. This does not mean you have to agree with their perspective but respect their differences—as you would appreciate they do for you in return.
Last but not least, we must remember the importance of staying connected to humanity by staying involved in our community, expanding our social network, and avoiding the accidental self-sorting process.
