Traditional talk therapy isn’t for everyone and even if it works can take years to achieve results. This leaves many looking for alternative treatment options. If the impact of past or recent trauma are negatively impacting your life EMDR therapy may help.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a method of psychotherapy but talking is minimal. You find a therapist who specializes in EMDR and briefly discuss the source of your trauma. This could be PTSD, experiencing trauma, or witnessing trauma. Then you are asked to think about the trauma or violence while you watch a light or shape move across a screen for a predesignated amount of time.
How Does It Work?
When you are struggling to move past a traumatic experience it creates a blockage in your brain. In order to remove the blockage you must create a new pathway in your brain and the visual stimuli of EMDR facilitates the process of creating a new pathway.
Does It Work?
The great thing about EMDR is that most patients only need 12 to 16 treatments to remove their blockage. Studies show that success rates for PTSD are as high as 77 percent.
If nothing else has worked or you are ready to try something new EMDR is worth a try. There are some online tools but it is best to work with a trained professional.
