Iron is an essential mineral and one that many of us don’t get enough of. Yes, the risk of iron deficiency is higher if you are vegetarian or vegan but even meat-eaters may be deficient.

Signs You Might Be Iron Deficient

There are some easy to ignore signs that you may not be getting enough iron in your diet:

  • Your hair has become unusually dry or brittle
  • Your nails have become brittle, or are chipping, cracking, or growing in dipped after they break
  • Your skin is dryer than usual
  • Frequent headaches
  • You are more pale than usual
  • An increase in anxiety
  • Cold hands or feet
  • A decrease in immunity

How To Increase Your Iron

It might seem as though an iron supplement would be the easiest solution, but iron supplements are difficult for your body to absorb. Food is your best source of iron, and there are plenty of non-animal options to choose from:

  • Cook more of what you eat in an iron skillet to naturally infuse all foods with trace amounts of iron
  • Eat beef, pork, chicken, duck, and eggs at least 3 days a week
  • Increase the amount of darky leafy greens in your diet
  • Eat more lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, and low-processed whole grains

If you are deficient, boosting your iron will rapidly improve your symptoms.
