If you are looking for a way to create fast and healthy meals for your family a rice cooker is a must. Think beyond plain white rice and try some of the ideas below.
Cook Any Kind Of Rice, Grain, Or Legume
I cook every grain under the sun in my rice cooker, often a combination of more than one. While I enjoy rice, I hardly ever cook rice—as I am a fan of bulgur and barley. I always add in a few tablespoons of beans to increase the protein profile.
Never Steam In Water
Instead of steaming in water I steam in veggie or meat broth. Get creative though as you could also stir in some tomato paste or use the juice from a can of stewed tomatoes. While it would be too vinegary to use in full, I even use the water leftover from canned goods like pickles, olives, or fermented foods—never more than 25% of the fluid content.
To really boost the flavor profile of your grains and make it more of a side dish, chop up some veggies. The key is in fine chopping to about the size of a pencil eraser, maybe a tiny bit larger. Some of my favorite add-ins include onions, garlic, tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, and fresh herbs. You can add spices in too.
Keep experimenting with your rice cooker grains and you’ll find plenty of tasty dishes for the entire family!
