Even if your goal is not to be the life of the party you might be looking for a few ways to better engage yourself in a group setting. Here are a few tips.
If there’s a piano and you can play, play. If you can sing, lead everyone in a group singalong—which is perfect for the holiday season. If you have no musical skills download some crowd-pleasing songs to your phone or laptop and be the DJ for the evening. Or host karaoke. No need for a karaoke machine as you can find tons of free karaoke songs with lyrics on YouTube.
Be A Conversation Starter
Come prepared with a joke, fun story about the host, funny story about you, or a bunch of ice breaker questions. This will help you feel empowered to walk up to people you don’t know at all or don’t know well and strike up a conversation. Make sure you are asking open-ended questions that garner more than a “yes” or “no” response.
Just Be Yourself
The goal of being an engaged partygoer doesn’t have to be to put on a show. If you are shy, or shy in group settings, or shy in groups where you don’t know very many people—you aren’t being yourself. So, relax—release your expectations and just be you.
Here’s to having a wonderful evening out!
