First, you must consult your physician before starting any new fitness program, especially when you are pregnant. However, many moms-to-be worry it’s not safe to work out when you are pregnant, but usually it is. Below are general guidelines.
Do What You Always Do
If your body is used to working out regularly, usually, you can still do a modified version of your preferred workout. For example, if you are an avid runner, your physician will likely find it is still safe. One the flipside, starting a running regimen is not the best idea when pregnant.
Workouts Designed For Pregnancy
Head online to your local fitness center or gym and see if they have any workouts designed for pregnant moms. These workouts will not only provide you with a healthy level of movement, but are often designed to support your body as your pregnancy progresses.
Can’t Work Out When You’re Pregnant? Walk It Out Instead
If you are having a difficult time squeezing in your workout, take a walk. Walking is an often underestimated method of physical fitness and an excellent way to keep your body balanced. Make it more fun by taking a romantic stroll on the beach, or head out for a walk with friends and family. Even if you don’t break a sweat, you will get your heart and blood circulating, and your body moving!
Your body will do a lot of changing in the next 9 months, and stretching will help to minimize pain. Yoga is excellent, and many studios offer classes for expecting moms. Or simply identify stretches designed for pregnancy.
Why work out when you are pregnant? The goal is not to lose weight, but to strengthen your pelvic floor, prepare for pregnancy, reduce swelling and inflammation, ease back pain, decrease inflammation, and more!
